Yoga Class - New Chapters - New Opportunities as a Teacher

I was lucky enough to afford treating myself to Yoga Teacher Training some years ago. I am not an expert Yogi, nor am I super flexible, but I am interested in the Spiritual side of Yoga, I do practice it and enjoy it. One day my Yoga teacher suggested to me that I could train to teach. I laughed at the time - but she meant it - she motivated me - and I took the challenge.

To teach Yoga, there is quite a lot involved in the training, you have to learn all about the human anatomy in detail, knowing how the heart works, the nervous system, the names of each and every muscle, where they connect, what movements stretch which muscles, all of this as well as knowing the history of Yoga, breathing, asanas and their Sanksrit names, how to structure a class, how to talk, how to teach appropriately for different groups of people, how to make corrections and how to administrate classes. There really is a lot involved.

Some months passed and I qualified! But, I didn't get to teach for quite a long time as my job did not give me enough time off to set up a consistent class for my students... Until, COVID 19, when I had plenty of time on my hands. So I decided to teach on ZOOM.

Classes were popular - twice a week - I went on a journey with some experienced students and had the pleasure of guiding some people who were absolutely new. During the isolation breaks I was able to teach classes at the local gym/hotel and then I got the opportunity to take over a class in Tollesbury too. I was teaching 4 classes a week!

Life changed after COVID and I moved to London. The gym/hotel closed for refurbishment and classes stopped. I was still returning to teach in Tollesbury once a week and even though the logistics were a little difficult, I kept it going for nearly a year after moving because I truly love to teach Yoga.

In August 2022, I made the decision to leave that class and I was quite blessed to find a lady who was moving to the area and hand it over to another qualified Yoga Teacher. I still get messages from the students from time to time and they are enjoying another style.

It felt right to pass the class on at that time. In life, I have found that making space for something new often allows the new Chapter to begin. Let the good times roll! I have said that after the Marathon and a holiday, I will look forward to teaching again in 2023.

In the meantime, I have already had one opportunity to teach in a care-home. I did this once, the logistics and travel were a little difficult, so it is not something I can pursue in that location, however it was extremely rewarding for the residents to experience some mobility, movement and meditation and I really enjoyed being the person to offer that.

The residents really enjoyed the sounds, I brought with me my tibetan singing bowl and small bells. They also really enjoyed the guided meditation, a journey through a field and a stream led by a butterfly. It was lovely to be able to instil a little calm in their day.
