Wimbledon Half Marathon

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

During my London Marathon Training - I knew it would be a good idea to boost the moral and run a couple of Half Marathons.

I booked in for the Wimbledon Half Marathon as it is less than a mile from home and was pleasantly surprised to actually see a WOMBLE for the first time!!!

It was during the extremely hot summer of 2022, the start time had been brought forward by an hour to keep us out of the midday sun. Luckily the course was half covered by trees, so runners were not fully exposed to the sun throughout.

I had no idea that Wimbledon Common was so hilly - so that was tough! I have done some Park Runs there before and knew that the course could be muddy, however in the extreme heat, obviously it had baked off into a hard crusty surface. When the stampede of runners took off, the first section of the course was un uphill that can only be described as being behind a stampede of Elephants kicking up dust in the Savannah. I was overwhelmed by the dust (and the steep hill) and found myself using my inhaler within the first 5 minutes. As the pack spread out, things got better and by lap two on the same hill it was much better.

I saw two runners take a tumble, one quite badly on a downhill and the other was right near the finish line. I was met at the finish - which was a pleasant surprise and went home for a well deserved Sausage Sandwich!!
