Sacral Chakra - Svadhishthana

The second Chakra in our journey of the Chakras - Sacral Chakra meaning sweetness, one's own abode. This energy centre is situated just below the belly button, its energy flows out to the front and back - all across the lower belly.


The Sacral Chakra is associated with the colour orange. The physical body parts connected to this Chakra are the reproductive organs, lower belly, lower back, intestines, bladder, kidneys and whole pelvic area. It governs balance of sexuality, intimacy, feeling pleasure, taking joy in life, spontaneity, being creative, movement and going with the flow. It is associated with the element of Water. Basically this Chakra is associated with the creation of everything and anything on this earth.

Mantras that would be useful: I feel, I am joyful, I create, I move, I flow, I experience.


Finding Balance


When this Chakra is balanced we are intuitivity creative, we go with the flow, we enjoy new challenges as they appear before us, we have satisfying friendships and are comfortable with our own bodies and our sexuality. We have a lot of energy and optimism, life is great!


If the Chakra is weak, we may feel unsatisfied a lot of the time, become distant and cold, tired, physically weak, shameful of our own bodies, wanting to isolate, we might hide in work with no play. This weakness can be caused by a significant change of circumstances or not moving enough or by much more serious issues that occurred during growing up.


If the Chakra is over-developed, it is likely that the pleasure seeking becomes a problem, perhaps to the point of full on addiction. A person might be always feeling intense feelings, never getting any peace, out of control. It generally makes people selfish as they want the pleasure over and above anything else.


Healing your Sacral Chakra may be a series of gentle exercise, or you may need rehab, it really depends upon your individual circumstances. Keeping the balance would consist of doing a few things for the health of this Chakra, like:

- Enjoy moving your body, maybe dance more

- Pamper yourself, give yourself permission to indulge in relaxation, have a massage or bath

- Look after your belly, eat healthy orange foods - clementines, sweet potatoes, peaches, mangoes

- Find joy in water, drink more water, swim more, bathe more, feel the water on your skin as your shower - take note of the water - we are 70% water - take note of your body.

- Observe the moon

- Make love, awaken your sacral chakra

- Have fun, allow yourself to go with the flow and enjoy something today that wasnt on the plan

- Be creative, make something, it could be a recipe, or a small piece of poetry, art, anything - just allow yourself to do it - if you were dreaming of writing a novel - just say OK I am going to write 15 minutes of it and see what happens - you might just be the next top author!!!


Try out Belly Breathing


Simply lie on the floor, with your hands on your belly and notice the belly expanding and contracting with each breath - easy and focussed - mindful pranayama and meditative.





The Sacral Chakra really is a fun and happy place to hang out - embrace it!
