I joined Parkrun in 2016. I wanted to run, I needed a goal. Anyone can join Parkrun and it is absolutely 100% free. You just join on the website and get given a barcode, that is all you need to show up and be a part of parkrun! The first ever parkrun was set up in Bushy Park in Teddington, now that I have written this I am motivated to do that one this week!!!
Parkruns are free, weekly, community events and they happen all around the world - I have joined Parkrun in Livonia, Detroit (which was apparently the first parkrun in the USA) - it was snowing, minus 5 degrees, but it was just the same - the people were really welcoming, the route was through a wood, some people went for coffee and cake afterwards - it was great - I felt "part of".
Every Saturday morning, the 5k runs take place in parks all over the country and the world at 9am. On Sunday mornings, there are 2k junior Parkruns for children aged 4 to 14.
There is no time limit to do the 5km, there are volunteers and a tail-walker who makes sure that everyone is counted and waited for - no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along, whether you walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate.
There are 1,148 events around the country to choose from.
You can find your nearest parkrun using the website.
For me, I have walked, jogged, run - I still need to volunteer and spectate sometime. You get the results texted to you and emailed after the event which will tell you your overall place, place by gender, place by age category, your time, whether you got your PB (personal best) and it keeps a track of all your locations and times, so you can see any improvements etc.. It really is a great way to keep healthy, and get outdoors, to feel part of your local community and improving your overall fitness.
There is also an App which has been developed and obsessive parkrunners are using this to challenge themselves more - it has fun items and I will blog about it separately! Watch this space....
My PB is 24:58, which I achieved at Maldon Prom in August 2021.
As at 25 Oct 2022 I have run 30 Parkruns in 8 different locations.
