Lions Breath

What is it?

Lion's Breath is an act of pranayama (breath control) which we can use in Yoga.

What is it good for?

Lion's breath is a type of pranayama that's said to boost energy, alleviate stress, eliminate toxins, and stimulate your throat and upper chest. In yoga, it's also known as Lion Pose.

How do I practice lion's breath? Whilst kneeling, the hands should rest on the thighs or knees with palms open and fingers spread widely, symbolic of a lion's sharp claws. The breath is performed by lowering the jaw to open the mouth wide, stretching the tongue out and curling it down.

Lean the upper body forward slightly. Inhale through your nose with your mouth closed. In one quick movement - open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue as much as you can, curling it down toward your chin. Exhale forcefully with a "ha" sound, feeling the breath come from deep within and passing across your entire tongue. Open your eyes wide and lift the eyebrows.

How many times should I do this?

Repeat lion's breath up to 7 times. Finish by breathing deeply for 1 to 3 minutes.
